The great altitudinal differences of this environment of subtropical mountain jungle are divided in three zones that give us a vast biodiversity.

The transition forest or Piedmont jungle: (350 to 900mosl) rain fall is between 600 to a 1000mm. It`s monzonic, the main species of trees are Palo blanco, Lapachos,Tipa, Pacarà etc.

Mountain jungle or rain forest: (800 to 1500mosl) this is the region with the maximum rain fall and biodiversity of the Yungas, the predominant trees are always green with coreaceas leaves.

Mountain forest: (1800 to 2200mosl) here the species are caducifolias. There are aliso forest, podocarpus (mountain pine) and small clamps of queñoas (polilepis).

The highest zone is occupied by the grass land known as the fog grass land that starts at 2200 upwards.

Hi – I’m a Brit birder resident in South America (Bolivia and now Argentina) for about the last 30 years. I take small groups of birders – families and serious “hard core” groups, on tailor-made itineraries to the best places in Misiones for birds. That means Iguazu Nat Pk and plenty of other great localities, including the mysterious Araucaria upland forests of central Misiones, with their own complement of rare and exotic species… I also keep myself up-to-date with all the best new ecolodges and new destinations in the region.
